beauty basics what to do when you hit the big 30

You've reached 30 and before you lies an exciting, life-altering decade! We focus on our careers, we decide to start a family, we take out our first mortgage... But it's not just our lifestyle that's on the move: our skin also has its issues. Here are some anti ageing beauty tips to help you along the way!

Brighten your complexion

Fact > When we reach our thirties, our circulation begins to slow down and our skin finds it harder to eliminate toxins. We need to start working on our peachy glow, so that we remain gorgeous and flawless, even if we've only crammed in a few hours' sleep. Too much sun (or resorting to sunbeds), smoking, junk food and alcohol affect melanocyte production, leaving us with an uneven skin tone.Solution > Apply antioxidant-rich treatments to zap free radicals responsible for dull complexions. If liver spots are cropping up, apply treatments that regulate melanin production and even out skin tone. If that doesn't work or if your liver spots have dug in their heels, you can always book an appointment with a dermatologist to discuss other options. During winter, opt for a skin-brightening serum that contains fruit acids to remove dead skin cells and exfoliate your epidermis

Apply anti ageing treatments

Fact > The dreaded wrinkles have arrived! Crow's feet have settled in, giving us an uneven skin tone and haggard appearance. It's time to spring to action, as on a deeper level our dermis has also begun to suffer from age-related changes. We need to nip things in the bud and slow down this ageing process.Solution > Consider making changes to your lifestyle: poor sleeping habits, our diet, smoking and sunbathing are all detrimental to skin. Aim to get enough shut-eye, eat a balanced diet, ditch the ciggies, don't sunbathe too much and protect your skin when you do. Apply multi-tasking anti-ageing treatments that will brighten your complexion, prevent oxidation, moisturise your skin and combat wrinkles. It's also the moment to treat yourself to an eye contour cream, which will reduce fine lines and smoothe away signs of tiredness.

Religiously apply a sunscreen

Fact > By the time we reach 20, our bodies will have used up more than half of our 'solar capital'. And yet, we still carry on as if nothing's happened - around 75% of people between 15 and 25 years old don't bother applying an SPF higher than 15! So we now need to limit any further damage. Doing so will prevent liver spots, which add years to our skin and dull our complexions.Solution > Even if you're lounging on a shady terrace, it's still wise to apply a sunscreen suited to your skin type. Opt for an SPF of between 30 and 50 and re-apply every couple of hours. During autumn, when in town or even on cloudy days, make sure you use a day cream that contains an SPF. Your skin will be left moisturised and protected!

Treat yourself to hydrating face masks

Fact > Moisturising our skin is THE one-way ticket to a flawless complexion. What ever age we are, we need to fully hydrate our skin for it to feel supple and comfortable. At 30, our skin starts to dry out and the passage of time begins to make its mark. Moisturising is essential if we want to keep wrinkles at bay.Solution > As well as applying moisturisers that contain hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin, pamper your face with a hydrating face mask once or twice a week. By slathering on a thick layer and leaving it for 10 - 15 minutes, your skin will bathe in active ingredients - shea butter, vegetable oils, vitamin E, trace elements - and give you immediate results. Radiant, plump, supple skin guaranteed!

Banish blemishes

Fact > More than 40% of women aged between 25 and 45 complain about an irregular skin texture, notably around the jawline and chin. Adult acne can also be an issue. Many women suffer from bouts of acne, depending on where they are in their monthly cycle. It's a common complaint, but specific treatments do exist.Solution > Careful cleansing, removing make up at night and choosing the right product all work a treat. The choice is yours - micellar water, cleansing lotions, oils, gels... Follow cleansing with anti-blemish treatments that will regulate sebum production, deeply clean your skin, close open pores and zap any pimples. If these don't work, a dermatologist will be able to help.

Butter up your body

Fact > We often forget to moisturise our bodies Even though our body skin is thicker than our faces, it still needs pampering. If not it will feel as rough as sandpaper, itch like mad, lose its healthy glow and age at a speed of knots. A problem made worse during cold weather or if we wear clothes that rub.Solution > Take a shower, pat your skin dry and warm up a body cream in your hands. Smoothe it up your ankles and legs until you reach your thighs. Follow by massaging it into your tummy and waist and finish off with your cleavage and arms. If you're pressed for time, dry oils are a speedy option! During winter, go for balms and butters that moisturise and nourish really dry skin.
